Action on Elder Abuse

Action on Elder Abuse is a specialist organisation that operates across the four nations of the United Kingdom. We focus exclusively on the issue of elder abuse and address abuse within people’s own homes (whether by family, friends or paid staff), within sheltered housing, and within care homes and hospitals.

We seek to:

  • Raise awareness of elder abuse
  • Educate people to recognise signs of abuse and respond appropriately
  • Influence statutory bodies to provide safeguarding and better care
  • Enable older people to challenge abuse and support each other through buddying programmes
  • Provide helplines and practical support to actual and potential victims

We address elder abuse in practical ways, which have been evaluated and developed over a number of years or piloted extensively.

This work includes:

  • Running a unique helpline dedicated exclusively to the issue of elder abuse. The helpline provides practical support, information and guidance for older people and anyone concerned about abusive practices or experiences.
  • Establishing and facilitating ’buddying’ services to bring together older people in order to challenge elder abuse and support each other. The objective is to provide a support network, which enables survivors of elder abuse to achieve full recovery and put the experienced trauma behind them.
  • Working with the media by writing articles, assisting in ’undercover’ work and commenting upon abuse cases in order to raise awareness of elder abuse, influence social policy and make sure as many people as possible know that we are here to help.
  • Undertaking project work and social policy activity. Our activities have resulted in a major focus by Government on adult safeguarding.
  • Providing educational material and direct training for those working with older people, including advocates, volunteers and unpaid community workers.
