Housing for older people with long term conditions

Care & Repair England has produced a series of guides for people with long- term conditions

These look at the suitability of existing housing advising on repairs, adaptations as well as moving options

They also look at issues such as heating and lighting, safety and security, going out and about, gadgets and equipment and include other useful sources of advice for that health condition

There are guides covering heart, respiratory and macular disease, dementia, stroke and arthritis.

Dementia and housing

A common concern for people with dementia is that confusion and memory loss will mean they cannot stay safely in their own home

But with the right support and with some simple design and layout changes, many people with dementia can and do enjoy living at home for much of the rest of their lives

Some people will choose to move home, and this can work out best for them

However, it is important not to jump too quickly ahead and make assumptions, rather than weighing up the pros and cons of various housing and care options

Knowing about the various possibilities can help your parent make decisions that best suit their circumstances

Arthritis and housing

A common concern for people with arthritis is that loss of strength, grip and mobility, together with pain and fatigue, will make it increasingly difficult for them to live independently at home

But with the right support, some changes and adaptations to the home, plus use of equipment, most people with arthritis can and do enjoy living in their own homes for the rest of their lives

Some people choose to move to a house, flat or bungalow which they find more manageable

If your parent is thinking about moving, it is important to weigh up the pros and cons of various housing and care options

Knowing about the different possibilities, and being clear about what features to look for, can help you make decisions that will best suit your changing circumstances
