What is At Home/Domiciliary Care?

It goes without saying that the majority of the elderly want to stay in their home for as long as possible

In their own home, an older person is in familiar surroundings. They  can sleep in their own bed, they know where everything is in the house and the surrounding neighbourhood and they can decide how they live their life

The time may come when, if they are to continue with this lifestyle, they will need extra help, either because they are becoming generally more frail, or because they are recovering form an illness or fall

They may start to need help around the house, or someone to shop for them, or bathe them

The first thing is to ensure that the environment they are in is as safe as possible and the things they need are within easy reach

There are a number of inexpensive aids that can make life easier for them, such as shower seats, non-slip rugs etc.

There will be a number of ways you will be able to help your parent directly in this situation, but you may also require regular carers, especially when your parent live at a distance

Getting care for your parent at home

You can arrange private care at your own expense, either on a permanent or respite basis

You can arrange a visit to your parent’s GP, with or without your parents, to discuss the situation and what assistance might be available

You can contact your parent’s local authority to find out what care is available through social services and other local authority funded schemes, such as occupational therapists and home safety visits

Any request for local authority help will require an assessment review of your parents. The assessments required and the potential help available varies for each local authority
