Marie Curie Charity
Marie Curie is the leading charity providing care to people with any terminal illness in their own homes or in one of its nine hospices. Known for its network of over 2,000 Marie Curie Nurses, Marie Curie provides care to patients across the UK, as well as emotional support to their families.
The charity is also a leader in research into the best ways of caring for people with a terminal illness. In addition to this the charity designs and advises on end of life services and works to ensure that the best possible care and patient choice is at the heart of commissioning end of life care across the UK. All Marie Curie services are completely free of charge
Hospices
- Our nine hospices across the UK provide free specialist care for people with serious illnesses, and emotional support for the families, giving them the best possible quality of life. There are Marie Curie hospices in Belfast, Bradford, Edinburgh, Hampstead (London), Liverpool, Newcastle, Cardiff and the Vale (Penarth) and West Midlands (Solihull). The charity provides care to more than 38,000 people with terminal illnesses, and is the largest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS.
The Great Daffodil Appeal
- The Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal, in March, asks people to make a donation and wear the charity’s daffodil pin. The money raised will help Marie Curie Nurses provide more free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes or one of the charities hospices
- Since the first Great Daffodil Appeal took place in 1986, more than £70 million has been raised to fund the charity’s work
- Marie Curie wants people wherever they live to be able to have a ‘good death’, provided with the care they want and need, with support available for them and their families. Research shows that currently 63% of people want to be cared for and die at home, yet only 44%, including those in care homes, do. This is because not enough or the right type of health and social care is available
- Marie Curie enables more people to be cared for and die in the place of choice, surrounded by the people and things they love, and campaigns to ensure that those who are terminally ill have faster access to free social care
- As people live longer, increasing numbers of people have long-term conditions requiring more complex support towards the final stages of life. Despite this, end of life care is an under-researched area
- Marie Curie invests in high quality research to provide real benefits to people with terminal illnesses, their carers and families. Marie Curie is the only charity exclusively funding end of life care research and invests around £3million per year in research
Marie Curie Fundraising Groups
- These are volunteers that meet regularly to organise and support fundraising activities in their local community. From holding Great Daffodil Appeal collections to fete stalls, Blooming Great Tea Parties to black tie balls, our fundraising groups throw themselves into local and national fundraising campaigns alike
- Groups really are our ambassadors in their local community. They help spread the word about the work of Marie Curie, encouraging and supporting local people, clubs and organisations to fundraise for us too. Our groups also receive donations locally, encourage people to donate goods to our local shops and promote our events to their community. Additionally, they inform people of other ways to support us, such as through regular giving or leaving a gift in their will
