Mobile apps help monitor older people

It’s difficult to persuade older people to have care at home

There is a fine line between caregivers and older people. While as a caregiver, you are trying to make the lives of your parents as comfortable as possible, you will still need to keep your own  personal life going. Older people, however, strive to remain as independent as possible, no matter how much you worry about them. Even when hospitals recommend having carers at home, not all older people will agree to have a stranger in the house.  At the same time, technology is rapidly developing and one of the possible solutions of keeping an eye on your parents is to use mobile apps and their monitoring technologies. Nevertheless, if you don’t want to hurt their pride , you will have to handle this issue carefully.

How to persuade your elderly relative to use a mobile monitoring app

Before you install any of the monitoring technology, you should start with a human touch. Discuss with your parents which way of helping them at home is the most suitable and acceptable for them. You want them to feel safe,  without making too many changes which may  cause more problems, especially if your parents are suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s, as it can be very disorientating. Mobile monitoring apps  are a good option to consider, as they are less intrusive than having a carer living in.

Mobile phone monitoring

To start with, let’s take the easiest yet most helpful app that allows  mobile phone monitoring. With a help of pumpic app, you can monitor your older parents through their mobile phone or any other Android, IOS or Blackberry device. It allows you to monitor the phone remotely through your PC or a personal  mobile phone. The features include monitoring text messages and calls, especially emergency calls , emails, contact list and surrounding noises, which are of great help when your parents are not picking up the phone. The most useful feature  is GPS location tracking. Wherever your parents are, you can find out their exact real time location through your mobile phone remotely.

Home monitoring

The app itself allows you to track the entire house with a help of digital cameras, which work both night and day. You can keep an eye on your elderly relatives via mobile phone remotely any time, even  if you are flying to another country. The app has “smart home”option, which means that you can equip your parents home with sensor devices which allow you to control garage, front door, oven etc remotely. The only problem is the installation of cameras, as older people rarely want to be monitored throughout the day, and you will have to get their permission before installation.

Health monitoring

The app comes with several devices of your choice, which can monitor your elderly parents’ blood pressure, heart rate and glucose level. The devices are wireless and do not exceed 14 cm. While your parents examine their blood pressure, you can monitor results through your mobile phone, or send them directly to your doctor. The app is very easy in use and very light. It works via Bluetooth, which is perfect for travelling, as it doesn’t require Wi-Fi connection.

Wearable tracking device

This is a device worn as a bracelet in order to track heart rate and GPS location. The app will tell you how much your older relatives  have been exercising that day and how many miles they have walked and most importantly, you will know their exact location, so they never get lost.

Using mobile monitoring apps can surely ease your life and life of your elderly parents. You will be able to travel stress-free, knowing that your loved people are safe.  In addition, they are very affordable..
