Dementia UK & Admiral Nurses

Dementia UK is committed to improving quality of life for all people affected by dementia

Their mission is to support families to live positively with dementia and to develop professionals to provide high quality care for those living with it

Dementia UK works in partnership with NHS providers and commissioners, social care authorities and voluntary sector organisations to promote and develop new Admiral Nursing services

The charity is responsible for upholding standards, sustaining service and supporting Admiral Nurses in practice

Admiral Nurses

Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses, who offer individualised support to family carers

Working collaboratively with other professionals, Admiral Nurses work in care homes, in the community and, most recently, in hospitals and seek to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers

They use a range of interventions that help people live positively with the condition and develop skills to improve communication and maintain relationships

  • Offer skilled assessment of the needs of family carers and people with dementia.
  • Provide information and practical advice for family carers on different aspects of caring for a relative/friend with dementia.
  • Work with families at the point of diagnosis and throughout the caring journey, providing emotional and psychological support and guidance about accessing services.
  • Help family carers and people with dementia to develop and improve skills to assist with care-giving and to promote positive approaches to living with dementia.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals and organisations to facilitate co-ordinated care provision.
  • Work with family carers to enable them to express their wishes and views about the services they receive.

There are currently over 100 Admiral Nurses working in the UK

They adhere to stringent quality control standards and are highly trained.

You can get referred to an Admiral Nurse service from your GP, or you can find out if there’s an Admiral Nurse service near you and contact them directly for assistance.
