Carers Trust

There are seven million carers in the UK – that is one in 10 people and one in three people are expected to become carers at some stage in their lives. Carers Trust works to improve the support, services and recognition for anyone living with the challenges of caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems.

We’re the largest charity for carers, reaching more than 467,000 carers, including just under 25,700 young carers, through the unique network of independent carers centres, Crossroads Care schemes, young carers services and interactive websites.

Together with our Network Partner, we provide access to desperately-needed breaks, information and advice, education, training and employment opportunities. We help carers to maintain their own health and wellbeing and support them so they do not feel isolated. Our Network Partners benefit from the provision of grants, our work to improve carers services and we help carers make their needs and voices heard and provide someone to talk to, in person and online.

We want the role and contribution of unpaid carers to be recognised and to ensure that they are given access to the quality support and services they need to live their own lives.

After all, carers save the state £119bn worth of care each year. In England and Wales more than 1.2 million carers are over the age of 65, while there are an estimated 177,000 young carers under the age of 18 according to the 2011 Census, but this figure is believed to be highly under representative as many young carers remain unidentified.

We’re campaigning for carers in a number of areas, which include: the Government committing more money to social care; placing a duty on the NHS to identify carers and for funding allocated to carers to actually be spent on carers to allow them to take a break.

There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK and we want carers of people with dementia to receive the best care and support and to ensure that their needs are better addressed in the health and care system.
